Michigan Council of Maternal and Child Health (MCMCH) and member organization the MASN were awarded a 2021 Special Projects and Emerging Ideas grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund (MHEF) for a collaborative project: Building Support and Sustainability for School Nurses.
This two-year project's goal is to foster collaborative efforts to educate on the need for and role of school nurses and engage both healthcare and education partners in sustainability planning for school nurses.
In the last two years, crucial attention has been directed to the need for health services within schools, to better support students and better utilize the time and energy of the education professionals. With significant state and federal funding to encourage school districts to hire and retain support professionals such as school nurses, along with the Caring for Students program, the climate is ripe for increasing the number of school nurses in Michigan.
The MHEF award announcement notes: "Various projects in this cohort address needs that have been exacerbated by the pandemic. For example, one initiative from Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health directs attention to the importance of school nurses and strengthened health services in Michigan schools. In partnership with the Michigan Association of School Nurses, the Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and many other associations, the project team will educate on the need for and role of school nurses and work with healthcare and education partners in sustainability planning."
